Sarah_Gaughan_2.jpgSarah Gaughan

When Selinsgrove Area High School student, Sarah Gaughan needed to come up with a senior project, she knew that she wanted to assist area residents through the American Red Cross.  Working through the Snyder County Chapter, Sarah learned about the need for disaster comfort kits.

When asked why she decided to purchase supplies and assemble the comfort kits, her response was immediate.  Sarah stated that “because the American Red Cross was there to assist her family following severe flooding, she was well aware of not only the needs of disaster victims, but the many services provided to them by the American Red Cross”.

Sarah began by selling lollipops to raise funds needed to purchase the items for 30 comfort kits.  Items include a wash cloth, soap, toothpaste, deodorant and other hygiene items needed by a disaster victim within the first few days following a disaster.  The balance of the cost of the items was donated by Sarah and her family.

Edna Reinard, Executive Director of the Snyder County Chapter, stated that “the American Red Cross is not a government agency; we rely on the generosity of our community to be able to provide disaster clients with food, clothing, shelter and other emergency needs following a disaster.  Disaster clients are never charged for services or goods they receive; they are a gift given through material and financial donations from caring individuals throughout our area.   Sarah’s hard work is very much appreciated by the chapter as well as the clients who will receive the comfort kits in their time of need".

Devannah.jpgDevannah Dunn

When most children are asked what they would like for their birthday, their thoughts turn to a party, gifts or a trip to somewhere special.  That wasn’t the case for Devannah Dunn .  When asked by her parents what she wanted to do for her birthday, her immediate answer was “I don’t know”.  However, that response, soon changed.  While at church the following Sunday, Devannah heard Pastor May tell the congregation of the food, or rather the lack of food in the emergency food pantry of the Snyder County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

On their way home from Church, Devannah announced to her parents that she had decided what she wanted for her birthday; she wanted “to feed the hungry”.  With the support of her parents, Shari and David Dunn, that’s exactly what she did.  Instead of a gift for herself, she requested individuals attending her birthday party to bring a gift of food; members of the church, family, friends and neighbors also contributed.  Devannah proudly accompanied her parents as they delivered the many bags and boxes of food to the American Red Cross.

With the economic tough times currently facing our community, 4-year-old Devannah has already learned the meaning of helping others.  The Snyder County Chapter of the American Red Cross, a United Way member agency, would like to thank Devannah, her family and the many individuals who donated food to Devannah.

Kevin.bmpSelinsgrove Area High School student, Kevin Rynearson, collected 918 lbs of food and 50 blankets, which he donated to needy families in Snyder County at a "Blanket Our Community With Hope" event on October 11.  The community was invited to join him at an outdoor movie on the Rotary Field at Selinsgrove.  Attendees were asked to bring a blanket and/or a donation of food in lieu of paying an admission fee.  Kevin is shown with a potion of the food collected.
